Russell Brand reportedly spent his first night at HMP Wandsworth apart from other inmates after a judge denied him bail following his conviction for one count of defilement and three counts of assault involving defilement. The actor and comedian, 51, was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, November 5. Mr Justice Bennathan told Brand he faced “a significant custodial term” and remanded him in custody ahead of sentencing on Monday, November 9. The Daily Mail reported that Brand was placed in the prison’s Care and Separation Unit, where inmates spend most of the day in their cells and have limited opportunities to socialise. According to the newspaper, officers considered his public profile a safety concern even in the wing for vulnerable prisoners. A source told The Sun that Brand “looked shaken and was quiet” when he arrived. The source said he was being kept away from other inmates because of concerns about his safety linked to his offences, wealth and celebrity status. The source added that officers would monitor him closely and that he could be transferred to another prison after sentencing. According to The Sun, Brand was searched and scanned on arrival and underwent a medical assessment, during which he was asked about any medication he was taking. He was then given prison clothing and a first-night pack containing toiletries and basic food supplies. Staff reportedly offered him a Bible and a vape pack. He was also allowed a three-minute phone call, although it was unclear whom he contacted. Separately, the Metropolitan Police are investigating two further allegations of defilement against Brand. He has already been questioned about those allegations, which are separate from the offences for which he was convicted. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said the verdict was “first and foremost a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward and reported what happened to them”. “Despite intense media and public scrutiny, they relived deeply personal and traumatic experiences and placed their trust in us. Without their bravery, this outcome would not have been possible,” he said. Furphy also thanked the detectives and specialist staff who worked on the case and urged anyone who may have experienced similar offences to contact police. “You will be listened to, supported, and treated with dignity and respect,” he said. Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the offences as “horrifying” and praised the women for speaking out. Speaking to Times Radio, he said conviction rates in defilement cases had improved but remained too low. “We need to get the conviction rate up. It has improved, but not enough,” he said.
