Is This Why Modern Dating Is So Difficult? - Kalatium

Nairaland · Oct 31, 2026

One comment I came across during a relationship discussion caught my attention:

"Men are in love while women are in business. At some point, men are looking for life partners while women are looking for life projects. The two parties have different missions, so they struggle to find each other."

It sounds harsh, but there is an uncomfortable conversation worth having here.

In today's Nigerian dating environment, financial stability has become a major consideration for many women. With the economy biting hard, some women are not merely looking for companionship. They want a man who can provide financial security, improve their standard of living, support their ambitions and perhaps give them opportunities they never had growing up.

There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting a financially responsible husband. Men also have expectations. The problem begins when financial capacity becomes the primary measure of a man's worth and genuine affection becomes secondary.

A man may approach a woman with sincere intentions, but because he does not drive an expensive car, live in a desirable neighbourhood or have enough money to fund her preferred lifestyle, he is dismissed before she gets to know him.

Meanwhile, another man who can afford expensive dates, holidays, gifts and monthly allowances may receive considerably more attention, even when his character and intentions are questionable.

This creates a difficult situation for men who genuinely want companionship and partnership rather than a financial arrangement.

However, men should also examine themselves. Some want a young, beautiful, sexually inexperienced woman who will be submissive, loyal, hardworking and emotionally available, while offering little beyond promises. They want the benefits of marriage without necessarily having developed the character and resources required to sustain one.

Both sides can have unrealistic expectations.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WANTING A HUSBAND AND WANTING TO BUILD A MARRIAGE

There is a difference between searching for someone to solve all your problems and looking for someone with whom you can build a life.

A woman who wants a husband should also ask herself what kind of wife and partner she intends to be. A man who wants a wife should equally ask himself what kind of husband he is prepared to become.

Marriage is not an escape route from poverty, nor is it a retirement package for a man who has worked hard all his life.

It is a partnership involving financial responsibilities, emotional support, sexual compatibility, family obligations, sacrifice and mutual accountability.

WHAT ABOUT AGE AND SEXUAL HISTORY?

Some men prefer younger women, while others prioritise maturity, compatibility and shared values. Some women prefer financially established older men, while others are perfectly comfortable building with someone at their level.

Neither preference automatically makes someone a bad person.

However, reducing a woman's worth to her age or sexual history is just as unreasonable as reducing a man's worth to his bank balance.

A person's past does not tell you everything about their present character. A young woman is not automatically innocent, an older woman is not automatically damaged, and a wealthy man is not automatically a good husband.

What matters is character, honesty, self control, compatibility and the ability to honour commitments.

MY QUESTION FOR NAIRALANDERS:

Are men and women approaching modern relationships with fundamentally different intentions?

Are men increasingly looking for companionship while women prioritise financial security, or is this simply a stereotype that ignores the many women and men who genuinely want to build together?

Can a relationship survive when one person sees marriage as a partnership but the other sees it primarily as an opportunity for financial advancement?

Let's discuss this honestly.
