I am writing this as a concerned APC supporter – and I am deeply troubled by what I witnessed today in Birnin Kebbi.

This morning, I passed the venue where Atiku Abubakar was scheduled to campaign. It happens to be on my route to work. ADC supporters were already gathered, waiting for his arrival. I passed without stopping.
On my way back from the office, I saw ADC buses making U-turns and speeding away. My first thought was that they were heading to the airport to receive Atiku.

But when I reached the Plus Center roundabout, I saw a large crowd of APC supporters and Yan tauri – some armed with cutlasses and local weapons – attacking ADC vehicles. I saw shattered glass everywhere. Cars glasses were being vandalised.
That was when I understood why the ADC buses were making U-turns and fleeing. They had seen the danger ahead.
This is not good for my party. This is not good for Kebbi. This is not good for Nigeria.
The distance between the ADC campaign venue and where APC supporters gathered is barely half a kilometre. The road to the ADC venue passes through that area or you take a very long alternative route.

Tensions are high. If care is not taken, something terrible could happen today in Birnin Kebbi.
I am calling on the security agencies to intervene immediately. Deploy personnel to the area. Separate the two groups. Prevent any further escalation. We cannot allow political differences to turn into bloodshed.

To my fellow APC supporters: This is not the way. We are a party that believes in democracy, not thuggery. We cannot claim to be the party of progress while destroying vehicles and threatening lives. This behaviour is totally wrong, and I condemn it in the strongest terms.
