A Nigerian male nurse has questioned why male nurses are prevented from entering labour wards in some hospitals while male doctors are allowed to attend to women during childbirth. In a video shared online, he expressed frustration over the practice, claiming that even male nursing interns are denied access to labour wards despite needing practical experience. “A woman will be in labour, and male nurses will be stopped from entering the labour ward. But when the woman cannot give birth, they will come and call one HO or MO,” he said. He criticised senior nurses and hospital administrators who enforce such restrictions, arguing that they interfere with the clinical training of male nurses. The nurse urged his male colleagues to familiarise themselves with the policies of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and challenge restrictions that contradict their professional training requirements.
